Delta promised free Wi-Fi on board as early as February 2023

Last Thursday, the American carrier announced the launch of a new service — Delta Sync. It is touted as “an entirely new entertainment system that will offer passengers virtually everything that a modern home smart TV can do.”

The most notable component of Delta Sync — free Wi-Fi, which Delta will offer on most domestic long-haul flights starting February 1.

The airline is partnering with Viasat and T-Mobile on this project. Wi-Fi will be available on more than 700 aircraft by the end of 2023, and international and regional airliners will have free Internet access by the end of 2024. To connect, passengers only need to become a member of the Delta SkyMiles loyalty program.

In addition to Wi-Fi, starting this summer, SkyMiles users will also have access to the Delta Sync platform with many entertainment options. Passengers will be able to watch shows, read restaurant and travel guides, play games, and even order food and drinks.

Delta first announced its intention to provide free in-flight Wi-Fi in 2019. According to the airline's website, Wi-Fi is currently only available on select flights for an additional fee.

Since 2017, Delta has been offering passengers free in-flight messaging on mobile devices via popular messengers.
