Ireland named Europe's Best Destination for the 9th consecutive year

Travel magazine Weekly announces the winners of its 20th Annual Readers' Choice Awards at a gala dinner and ceremony held on December 14 at the American Museum of Natural History in New York.

Ireland has won first place among the best tourist destinations in Europe. Among the participants representing Europe were other countries: Italy, Greece, Spain, France and Croatia.

According to data recently released by the Irish Tourism Industry (ITIC), in September this year, Ireland hosted a total of 900 000 foreign visitors, down nearly 9 percent from last year.

In addition, despite a significant improvement in the tourism industry, the volume of tourists continues to remain below pre-pandemic levels, and the leader in tourist flow to Ireland this autumn traditionally remains the North American market. Americans contributed €1.6 billion to the economy in 2019.

The energy crisis, rising inflation, and remaining travel restrictions are hindering the industry, according to ITIC.

« Hotels and restaurants are reporting that energy bills have skyrocketed to unsustainable and unprecedented levels, and their profitability has come under severe pressure,” said ITIC CEO Eoghan O'Mara Walsh in this regard.

This year's Travel Award Weekly Readers’ The Choice Awards were held in a total of 82 categories.
