Passenger traffic at Spanish airports recovered by 88 percent in 2022

For Spanish airports December the past ended with an almost complete restoration of passenger traffic — 98.1% compared to the same month in pre-pandemic 2019.

Aena network airports closed 2022 with a total of 243,681 775 passengers, representing an 88.5% recovery in passenger traffic compared to 2019 last year before the COVID-19 pandemic. In December, the recovery was close to 100%, standing at 98.1% compared to the same month in 2019, with a total of 17,897,162 passengers.

During the year, the number of aircraft flights amounted to 2,216,327, or 93.9% of the 2019 figures. 242,881,309 passengers flew commercial flights in 2022, with 82,319,704 of them traveling within Spain, down 3.8% from 2019, and 160,561 605, or minus 15%, — abroad. 

Adolfo Suárez Madrid-Barajas Airport recorded the highest number of passengers in 2022 — 50 633 652, which is 18% less than in 2019.

Madrid is followed by Barcelona-El Prat Josep Tarradellas Airport with 41,639,622 passengers — minus 21%, Palma de Mallorca airport with 28,573,364 passengers (-3.9%), Malaga-Costa del Sol with 18,457,194 passengers (-7.1%), Alicante-Elche with 13,202,880 passengers (-12.3%), Gran Canaria — 12 417 699 (-6.4%), Tenerife Sur Airport — 10 821 703 (-3.1%), Ibiza — 8 156 675 (0%) and Valencia — 8,114,852, down 5% from 2019.

As for the number of aircraft in operation, the largest indicator in 2022 was recorded by the Madrid-Barajas airport named after Adolfo Suarez — 351,906 (-17.5%), the second was the airport of Barcelona-El Prat Josep Tarradellas — 283,394 (-17.8%). They are followed by: Palma de Mallorca — 220,690 (+1.6%), Malaga-Costa del Sol Airport — 144 107 (-0.6%), Gran Canaria — 119 530 (-5.5%), Alicante-Elche — 90,109 (-11.1%), Ibiza — 80,723 (+7.1%), Tenerife Sur — 75,605 (+7.6%) and Valencia Airport — 73,498, down 5.4% from 2019.

As of December, the Aena airport network registered a total of 17,897,162 passengers, down 1.9% from the same month in 2019. 17,807,792 were commercial passengers, of which 6,703,776 were domestic flights (up 3.9% compared to December 2019) and 11,104,016 — to international — minus 5.3%.

The number of aircraft received in December 2022 at the airports of the Aena network was 158,442, which is 2.8% less than in the same month of 2019.
