EAST TEXAS (KSLA) – Texas Lawmakers convened earlier this week at the state capital for the 86th legislative session.
With three days under the belt one ArkLaTex legislator says things are moving smoothly.
Texas State Representative Gary VanDeaver was back at his New Boston, Texas office today after spending the week in Austin.
Representative VanDeaver said the main focus of this years legislative session remains on school finance and property tax reform. VanDeaver said it is early but he believes law makers will successfully address these issues.
Representative VanDeaver is a former school superintendent and plans to file legislation concerning the “State of Texas Assessment of Academic (STAAR) Testing.
“If you talk to most parents most teachers and most students they would tell you that high stake standardize testing is not good,” Rep. VanDeaver said. “It puts undo stress on the student undo stress on the teacher it is really not measuring what we like to measure.”
Representative VanDeaver said he has already spoken to the Commission of Education about his concerns and says there are some particulars in the bill that will have to be worked out.
