Extra long haul flights are considered non-stop flights that last more than 16 hours. The countdown starts from the moment the aircraft takes off and ends with a stop at the destination. Most of these flights link the Asia-Pacific region with major airports in the Americas.
On November 4, 1982, Pan American World Airways operated its first 11,979 km flight from Los Angeles in Australian Sydney. Two years later Qantasstarted flying this route, and also opened flights between Melbourne and Los Angeles.
These flights were operated by Boeing 747 and lasted approximately 16 hours. Interestingly, today the Boeing 787 Dreamliner has reduced the travel time on this route to 13 hours.
Although ultra-long-haul flights have been around for quite some time, they have only recently become more economical. And above all, thanks to the new Boeing 787 and Airbus A350 wide-body aircraft.
Not only do these modern aircraft offer improved long-distance performance, they are also lighter than older aircraft, which means they use less fuel. For example, the A350 burns approximately 5 & nbsp; 800 kg of fuel per hour of flight, and the Boeing 747, traditionally used for long-haul transportation, — 12 000 kg.
In 2003, Singapore Airlinesbegan operating Airbus A340-500 flights from Singapore's Changi (SIN) to Newark Liberty International Airport in New Jersey (EWR). At the time, it was the longest flight in the world. In 2018, the airline switched to the A350-900ULR.
In the same 2018, Qantas launched a Boeing 787 flight between Perth and London. which was an important milestone in the history of aviation. Now there are direct routes between all continents except Antarctica.
With a flight duration of 17 hours and 15 minutes over a distance of 14,500 km, Perth–London is now the world's third longest flight.
In 2020, an ultra-long-haul flight took place between Singapore's Changi Airport and New York's John F Airport . Kennedy. Passengers spent 18 hours and 50 minutes in the Singapore Airlines A350-900ULR. Distance between destinations 15,332 km — it is the longest flight in the world.
With all the beauty and undeniable convenience of non-stop flights, they have opponents. Turkish Airlines and Qantas are also developing several ultra-marathon projects, including one of the longest routes in history: a 21-hour flight between Sydney and London.
