Why is India closing its overseas tourism offices?

An office memorandum issued by the country's Deputy Secretary of State Rajesh Kumar reads: “According to the decision of the government, the Ministry of Tourism is closing all overseas tourism offices in India until March 31, 2023.” All employees of Indian tourism offices abroad are requested to “take the necessary actions to implement this decision and report on the measures taken.”

If we talk about the reasons, the decision of the authorities looks logical. The government has considered that the cost of operating overseas offices is not offset by the number of additional tourists that the Indian tourism sector receives from these countries. In the modern world, the digital environment on the one hand and the existing embassies on the other will be an adequate alternative without additional costs.
